This assignment will consist of a quantitative article critique with a focus on the methods, statistics, analysis and interpretation. It will be important to analyze and evaluate the article not just summarize – for example it is not enough to say the sample size was adequate. You should state the sample size and state why you know it was adequate.
Research Critique Introduction
I want to talk about the Research Statistical Critique assignment. You will choose one of the 4 (four)
articles provided on this assignment page. Do not submit your own article. You must use one of the 4
linked articles in the assignment directions.
You will use a rubric to critique the various parts of the study provided. It is your opinion. You should
not use any quotes, or references unless you use an outside source to substantiate your opinion, such as
Polit and Beck (2017). More information about the critique process can be found in Polit and Beck
(2017), p. 291 if you want more information about it.
Describe what you believe the findings are. For example, you would identify what sampling method is
used- probability vs non-probability sampling. Then you would identify the specific type of sampling
technique used.
Fill in the rubric- this will be faster for you and faster for the faculty to grade the assignment. Be sure to
check out the Critique FAQ for any questions students may have asked in the past.
Here are answers to questions students have asked about the Critique:
1. For our Quantitative Critique, is this supposed to be in paragraph/paper form? Or are we to fill out the rubric with our responses like the example does? Answer: Use the template/form that also is the grading rubric. Do NOT write in paragraph form.
2. When we are using the rubric table to enter our findings do we need to cite the article beside each set of answers or do we use citations only if we used another source to answer a question? The example didn’t list any citations or references so I just wanted to clarify. I am not using direct quotes but the answers do come from the research paper. Answer: When you complete the critique include the citation at the top of the page. Since a critique is by its very definition about a specific article, once you do that you have indicated where the information came from. Only if you use an outside reference to make a point (you don’t have to do this), do you need to reference any other document.
3. Do not use quotes in the critique; one of the important parts of this assignment is learning to synthesize the information and put it into your own words.
4. Use APA for the references- be sure to use 7th edition of APA. Here is a resource for you if you need help: Purdue Owl (Links to an external site.)
5. Do not double space in the table- it will be too large and cumbersome to use

Step 2. Expand on your interpretation of the results from Part 2
In the same word document, reflect on and clarify your interpretation of the previous. In addition to explaining the mechanics of the results, what do these results tell us more broadly about the problem, issue, or program you are focusing on?
Step 3. Write up the results.
Write up the results in detailed prose (not bullet points). If you’re using stardard linear regression (OLS) make sure to cover the following:
1. What is the overall model strength? (Adj. R-squared) What does this tell you about the validity of the model? If you have multiple models, what do these values tell you between them.
2. What is the statistical significance of each coefficient? (“Sig” or “p-value”) What does this tell you about each coefficient and variable?
3. If significant, what is the direction (positive or negative) of the coefficient? What does this tell you specifically about the relationship between the independent variable in question and the dependent variable? Does this result confirm or deny your hypothesis?
4. What is the magnitude (the strength of the relationship between each variable and the dependent variable) of each coefficient? A one unit change in the independent varaible leads to a coefficient-sized change in the dependent variable…
5. What does each significant coefficent direction and magnitude tell you about the broader policy, program, or issue?
6. Relate your findings back to the literature and causal theory discussed in that assignment (using appropriate citations). Do your findings reflect those in the literature?

Create a research question using the General Social Survey dataset that can be answered by multiple regression.
(1) Using the SPSS software, choose a categorical variable to dummy code as one of your predictor variables.
Estimate a multiple regression model that answers your research question.
Reply to the following:
(A) What is your research question?
(B) Interpret the coefficients for the model, specifically commenting on the dummy variable.
(C) Run diagnostics for the regression model.
