Demonstration of Mastery Exercises (DOMEs)
The activity will involve utilizing a combination of problem-solving, real-world application, critical thinking, attention to detail, and decision-making.
This exercise involves two parts:
Applying the scientific method to investigate the effects of greenhouse gases and clouds on Earth’s atmospheric temperature using an interactive simulation.
Integrating experiment conclusions and synthesizing related concepts to a) summarize the process of atmospheric heating, and b) evaluate given scenarios where atmospheric warming impacts flight.
The activity will take 2-3 hours to complete and is due at the end of the module.

Please look over the Research Problems in your textbook on page 33. Try to use as many
resources possible to explain these concepts in greater detail. Remember to keep the format of Lab Experiment 1.
Answer the following questions:
1) Find five countries whose energy intensity is significantly greater than that of the United
States. Is there an obvious explanation for their greater energy intensity? Do any of these
countries have anything in common? (Note: You may find territories of the United States listed
as separate countries, but don’t include them in your list.)
2) China has undergone rapid industrialization in recent decades, and its energy consumption has
increased accordingly. What has happened to its energy intensity? Support your answer with a
table or graph.
3) Find New Jersey′s or USA per capita energy-consumption rate and compare it with the U.S.
average of roughly 10kW per capita. What are some factors that might account for any
difference?
4) Which of the U.S. or world energy-use categories in Figure 2.6 has shown the most significant
change in its percentage of the total over the past few decades? Support your answer with data.
5) France has pursued energy independence through reliance on nuclear power. Prepare a table
or graph like the ones in Figure 2.6 showing France’s energy use by category, and compare it
with those graphs.
